Wonderful Luck, part three

In Canada in 1982, Impressive Lady gave us Chilly Hostess, by Vice Regent, the great granddam of Wonderful Luck, the runner who started off this story. Chilly Hostess was a winner at 2YO and produced SW Western Winter, 1992, a colt by Gone West and winner of over $135,000. He placed in a GR-11 stakes. The granddam of Wonderful Luck, No Huggy No Kissy, 1994, was two years younger than her full brother, Western Winter. Chilly Hostess also foaled Neat Dish, a group 111 placed winner at 2YO in Ireland and a daughter of Stalwart. Neat Dish is the dam of stakes placed Fill the Bill, a group 111 placed son of Bob Back.

To explain the magical story of Caucasienne and the rest, the generations of Nandi descendants tell a story of a continuance of class and of family. Bred to Val de l'Orne, 1972, Caucasienne gave us SW Adorned, 1987, winner of over $200,000 for Windfields. Adorned in turn produced Queen's Plate and Prince of Wales Stakes winner, Archers Bay, a bay colt by Silver Deputy. Archers Bay was a Canadian 3YO champion colt. He ran second as a 4YO in the Gulfstream H GR-1 among his stakes placings. Retired to stud at Windfields Farm, Archers Bay had a short life, 1995-2002, leaving 3 crops, 124 foals, 95 runners, 67 winners and 9 SW up to the time of my materials with a 2.19 AEI and a CI of 1.37.

Look at the procession of 7 generations of this Taylor family: Nandi, Nandina, Cut Flower, Chilly, Impressive Lady, Caucasienne, Adorned. Look at Archers Bay's sire line, another Windfields generational triumph: Nearctic, Northern Dancer, Vice Regent, Deputy Minister and Silver Deputy. The meaning of the word "tradition".

The Windfields Farm people were very happy when, upon the November 10, 1996, final Keeneland dispersal of Windfields stock, Eugene Melnyk, a Canadian owner, breeder and friend of the farm, purchased Adorned and brought her home. He brought her back to Canada where her family has, as we have seen, its deepest roots. What Wonderful Luck!

Wonderful Luck's family, part two

Part Two. On May 11, 1975, the Nearctic mare Chilly produced one of the best fillies to ever race in Western Canada, that being Right Chilly, a brown filly who sold in the Windfields yearling consignment for $25,000 and who was another daughter for Chilly of the farm stallion, Right Combination. Right Chilly won the B.C. Oaks and many other stakes for earnings of over $200,000, which was a lot back then in the West, with 12 wins from 2YO to 5YO. She produced the SW Darcia.

Next for Chilly was Stage Queen, May 17, 1976, a grey daughter of Ruritania. Word was now out on Chilly offspring and Stage Queen brought a yearling price of $102,000. She would be stakes placed against colts and become a magnificent broodmare for her connections. Her first was Stage Flight, 1983, a chestnut filly by Taylor stallion, Lord Durham. Stage Flight was Canadian 2YO filly champion, winning the championship race, the Princess Elizabeth. She became the dam of Cozzene's Flite. Stage Queen's next foal was SW Stage King, 1986, a bay colt by Verbatim who was graded stakes placed, but who died in 1990 at age four.

With her next SW, Stage Queen hit a grand slam. Bold Ruritana, February 24, 1990, was a bay mare by champion Canadian sire, Bold Ruckus. She ran first, second or third 25 times out of 32 starts, earning about $920,000. Mainly a grass specialist, Bold Ruritana was Canada's champion older female and grass female at 5YO. She ran third in the prestigious Yellow Ribbon GR-1 in California, and set a new course record for 9 furlongs on turf at Woodbine, clocking in at 1:45 and 1/5. That is speed!

Chilly's first foal, Impressive Lady, was returned to Windfields for her broodmare career. Her first live foal was Impressive Image, May 11, 1976, a bay colt by Tentam who was stakes placed from 7 wins from 2YO to 6YO, with earnings of over $90,000. Next up was Impressive Prince, May 30, 1977, a SW colt by Kamaraan 11 with 8 wins from 2YO to 6YO and over $105,000 in earnings. In 1979, Impressive Lady produced SW Supertam, a filly by Tentam, with 4 wins and over $60,000 racing in the States. In 1985, Impressive Lady gave us SW Imperial Colony, a colt by Pleasant Colony, who was her biggest money winner with over $540,000, and who won the important Canadian Maturity T for 4YO among his accomplishments.

Before producing Imperial Colony, Impressive Lady produced Caucasienne, 1980, a Windfields Maryland bred filly by the Nijinsky 11 stallion, Caucasus. She would die in 1988, but not before playing a vital role in what was becoming a saga of generations. We will see what this was in the next posting, in what began as a comment on Wonderful Luck.

Wonderful Luck, Chilly 2007

On May 27, 2007 (the anniversary of Northern Dancer's birthday) a 2YO chestnut filly named Wonderful Luck, a member of her sire, Trust N Luck's first crop won the $75,000 Cinderella Stakes at 5 and ½ furlongs at Hollywood Park. Her female family extends far back to another of the most ancient Windfields Farm sources. Wonderful Luck is out of No Small Wonder, by the Seattle Slew stallion, Capote, from No Huggy No Kissy, 1994, who was by Gone West from Chilly Hostess, 1982. Wonderful Luck is her dam's first foal. Chilly Hostess is what makes this story interesting for fans of Windfields Farm.

In 1953, Nandi, a Windfields owned daughter of Stimulus from Golden Feast, produced a filly foal by farm stallion Bull Page. To the cover of the great Canadian racehorse, Bunty Lawless, Nandi had already produced 19 race winner and foundation stallion, SW Windfields. The Bull Page filly, named Nandina, was a stakes placed winner at 2YO and 3YO. Bred to farm stallion, Menetrier, Nandina produced Milton Man, a stakes placed winner of 20 races from 2YO to 11YO, and, bred to Nearctic, Nandina produced Fils du Nord, stakes placed at 4YO. The big story from Nandina would come through her winning daughter, Cut Flower, again by a farm stallion, this time Chop Chop.

On February 28, 1966, Cut Flower produced Chilly, a bay filly by Nearctic with a star and a right white hind. She raced only at 2YO with a maiden win and 3 thirds from 9 starts and earnings of $2480. Her first foal, Impressive Lady, April 28, 1970, a brown filly by Impressive had a stripe down her face and sold as a yearling for a modest $8,700. Impressive Lady won half of her 16 races, with 5 placings to earn over $66,000. Among her stakes wins were the Mazarine, the Selene and the Star Shoot. She ran second in the Canadian Oaks to the important future broodmare, Windfields bred Square Angel, and ran third in the Manitoba Derby against colts.

Chilly's next foal, Cool Combo, May 1, 1971, by Windfields stallion, Right Combination, was a stakes placed winner with a star stripe and a left white hind. She sold for $16,000 and earned over $20,000. She became the dam of SW Seven Stones. Cool Combo's daughter, Royal Duet, by Taylor stallion, Lord Durham, produced SW Tyus, 1990, a brown gelding by Bold Ruckus, who placed second in the Stephen Foster H GR-11 and third in the Clarke H GR-111.

Chilly's next stakes horse was SW Cool Ted, May 20, 1973, a brown colt by New Providence, who went for a yearling sale price of $12,500 and who won over $34,000. A win in the Fairbanks Stakes was his best performance. We'll carry on the story of Chilly and Wonderful Luck next time.

Once again, Orchestra

When Orchestra's daughter, Orchestrina, was bred to Victoria Park, as Orchestra had been, the result was the winning filly, Chou Fleur, 1969. When bred to the ill-fated Windfields Graustark stallion, Ruritania, Chou Fleur produced the unraced Bon Debarras, 1975-1990. This caused an explosion of quality. Bred to Northern Answer, along came Eternal Search, 1978, a mare who won 18 races, including 15 stakes, for earnings of over $640,000 with 7 stakes seconds and 2 thirds. We will look at what Eternal Search has done as a broodmare, but first recognize Bon Debarras next SW, Gone to Royalty, 1980, a brown gelding by Queen's Plate winner, Royal Chocolate. Gone to Royalty won just under $380,000 with 5 of his 12 wins coming in stakes.

Ultimately, Bon Debarras was bred almost exclusively to Northern Dancer line stallions. One of them, Shareef Dancer, winner of the Irish Derby, sired Raslaan, 1985, a brown colt from her. He was a GR-111 SW in Australia. In 1988 there arrived a Nureyev filly, Savethelastdance, a brown daughter who would remain a bridesmaid when it came to winning stakes. In 15 starts, she had 4 wins, over $165,000 with seconds in 3 stakes and thirds in 3 others. We'll look at her produce in turn, but first back to Bon Debarras and Eternal Search.

To the cover of Danzig, Bon Debarras gave us Darbonne, a winning colt in Ireland who was GR-1 placed and became a sire. To the cover of The Minstrel, the mare gave us the winning Vevila, producer of 2 stakes placed runners, one of whom, Embur Sunshine, by Bold Ruckus, produced SW Ten Flat, 1998, a bay son of Meadowlake.

Eternal Search foaled stakes placed Vigorous Search, by Vigors, dam of SW Setareh, 1997, a brown filly by Sky Classic, and GR-1 placed. From the cover of Broad Brush we got stakes placed Young Brodie, dam of the horse who started off all this tale, SW Jiggs Coz, 2004, the grey colt by Cozzene. Moving back to Bon Debarras, bred to Windfields stallion, Lord Durham, by Damascus, we got the non-winner Finally Found, 1979, dam of SW Finality, 1999, a chestnut colt by Dehere, a GR-11 winner on turf, earning over $375,000. Finally Found also gave us Stolen Beauty, a GR-11 SW by Deputy Minister; Stolen Beauty became the dam of SW Moonlightandbeauty, 1999, a brown filly by Capote.

Eternal Search produced Seize the Queen, by Afleet, dam of SW Alta Aire, 2001, a brown filly by Slew City Slew. Finally Found gave us Heaven's Gate, by Septieme Ciel and dam of SW Tap Dancer, 2001, a chestnut colt by Sword Dance. Savethelastdance produced Sue's Last Dance, 1995, an unraced daughter of Forty Niner. Sue's Last Dance's daughter, Island Sand, 2001, a brown filly by deceased Tabasco Cat, won the Acorn Stakes GR-1, ran second in the Kentucky Oaks GR-1 and third in the Mother Goose GR-1. She won the Delaware GR-11 at 4YO and has earnings over $1.1 million

Now we come to the member of this prolific family who did win the Queen's Plate. Niigon, 2001, a brown son of Unbridled and Savethelastdance took the Canadian classic for his only stakes victory. He ran third in the Jim Dandy, GR-11, had a second in the Canadian classic, the Prince of Wales, and other stakes placings. He is now at stud in Ontario.

There are other stakes placed horses in the Orchestra family, but I have highlighted the stakes winners. The lists can seem to become too long. It will be interesting to see how this family continues to expand in the stakes winning department. It all goes back to Orchestra and that amazing Oshawa farm in the fifties and sixties.

The Saga of Orchestra

This posting and the one after it will discuss the family of the horse that didn't win the Queen's Plate on June 24, 2007 despite being the heavy favorite. That role came to Jiggs Coz because of earlier stakes victories this past spring at Woodbine. Jiggs Coz, a beautiful grey, muscular son of Cozzene from Young Brodie, by Broad Brush, ran a close third in the Plate after a big run on the final turn. His female family traces right back to the early days of the Windfields breeding program. The research I undertook for this posting and its companion took hours longer than usual. There is so much to say!

This is the family of Windfields foundation mare, Orchestra. A foal of 1953, Orchestra was imported by E.P. Taylor, and would become a SW for him. She was a daughter of the fiery tempered, French imported stallion, Menetrier, from stakes placed Abondance, by Maurepas. Abondance would produce in Canada one of the earliest SW by Nearctic, this being Holarctic. When Orchestra was bred to Nearctic, the result, the filly Orchestrina, would race in England and win at 2YO. Orchestra was a SW against fillies and colts for Windfields. She foaled the SW Two Violins, a speedster by Bolero. She also produced Allegro, a very feminine daughter of Windfields stallion, Chop Chop, who would be a stakes placed winner. Allegro gave us two stakes winning sons of Northern Dancer, the Canadian champion colt, Dance in Time, and the consistent, Western based gelding, Swinging Apache. Allegro's other SW was a son of Nearctic, Icy Note, also based in the West.

Orchestra was among the first group of mares bred to Chop Chop's champion son, and Queen's Plate winner, Victoria Park. The foal was Victory Chant, 1962, a winner and dam of SW Giboulee, 1974, by Northern Dancer, whom we have seen lately. Other Victory Chant SW were Proliferate, 1975, by Pronto, as well as the important SW Victorious Answer, a bay filly sired by the Northern Dancer Windfields stallion, Northern Answer.

Before we investigate Victorious Answer further, let's visit Khanbalic, 1981, a winning daughter of Vice Regent from Victory Chant. Khanbalic was the dam of Meadow Monster, 1991, a bay colt by Meadowlake and a GR-11 SW and new track record setter. She was also the dam of Danielle's Darling, by State Dinner and dam herself of SW Pettit's Quest, winner of over $260,000 and of Wickliffe Man. Let's also look at Victory Songster, 1968, a bay filly by Stratus from Victory Chant. Victory Songster was unplaced in 2 starts but foaled SW Golden Answer, 1973, a daughter of Northern Answer. Victory Songster also gave us Regents Rhythm, 1980, a chestnut SW daughter of Vice Regent.

Moving back to Allegro, her winning daughter by Tambourine, Dancing Castanet, produced SW Lady Ice, by Vice Regent. Orchestra's daughter, Orchestrina, by Nearctic, produced New Pro Escar, a gelding by Windfields Canadian Triple Crown winner, New Providence. New Pro Escar won one of the classics, the Prince of Wales T and had other stakes placings at that level. His half sister by Dr. Fager, Gay Prelude, 1972, was a Maryland bred Windfields product, and granddam of Joe's Tammie, a winner of over $640,000, including a victory in the Arlington Washington Lassie Stakes when it was a GR-1.

We can now begin the story of Victorious Answer. She became the dam of SW Victorious Trick, 1986, a brown filly by Clever Trick and winner of over $475,000. Victorious Answer also was dam of SW Last Answer, 2000, a bay gelding by Langfuhr, and winner of over $660,000. To the cover of Far Out East, Victorious Answer produced Oriental Answer, who in turn produced SW Papa Fuse, 2000, a chestnut colt by Lite the Fuse. Oriental Answer also gave us SW Young Turk, 1994, by El Prado. Far Out East sired another stakes producer from Victorious Answer in the form of Vicky's Orient, dam of SW Eastern Answer, 1995, a brown gelding by Bold Ruckus. Vicky's Orient was not through, giving us SW Northern Sky, 1992, winner of over $370,000, being a bay gelding by Conquistador Cielo. When Bold Ruckus was bred to Victorious Answer, the result was Little Star Vicky, dam of SW Starbeau, 1998, a brown colt by Barbeau, and dam also of SW Clever Response, a brown gelding by Clever Trick, and winner of over $270,000. When Clever Trick was bred again to Victorious Answer, we got a full sister to SW Victorious Trick, Vickey's Echo, dam of SW French Braids, 1995, a brown filly sired by Personal Flag, and winner of over $600,000.

There's another branch of the Orchestra family worth revealing. We'll see it tomorrow.

Good Night Shirt, Kennedy Road, 2007

Good Night Shirt, a 6YO chestnut gelding won the $150,000 Iroquois Hurdle Stakes GR-1 by over 5 lengths. It was for 4YO and up over 24 furlongs and was run over a yielding course on May 12, 2007. Good Night Shirt is a son of Concern from Hot Story, by Two Punch from Media Girl, by T.V. Commercial from Biava, by Kennedy Road.

Kennedy Road, 1968, was a bay horse with a bad temper, standing 16.3 hands, his face sporting a huge blaze. He was one of the best Canadian breds to ever race south of the border. He was champion 2YO colt in Canada, champion 3YO colt in Canada, champion older horse in Canada twice and Canadian Horse of the Year in 1972. He won the Hollywood Gold Cup GR-1, the San Antonio GR-1, the Queen's Plate, the Dominion Day H, the Cabrillo H, the San Diego H, the Grey H, the Cup and Saucer T, the Colin and the Plate Trial S. Kennedy Road had numerous stakes placings. He retired with 17 wins (10 stakes), 12 seconds (9 stakes) and 3 thirds (3 stakes) from 45 starts with earnings of over $480,000. He sired 19 SW in his first 13 crops, including GR-1 SW Variety Road.

His sire, Windfields bred Victoria Park, 1957, a son of leading Canadian sire, Chop Chop, from the unraced blue hen mare, Victoriana, by Windfields, also performed well in the USA, running third in the Kentucky Derby and second in the Preakness. Kennedy Road's dam, Nearis, 1964, was a chestnut daughter of Nearctic with a stripe down her nose from SW Bolaris, by Fairaris from SW Bold Fay, by Bull Dog. Bold Fay had 109 starts. Nearis ran only once, finishing fourth for earnings of $110. Kennedy Road was her first foal. Her second, Petrologist, was a full sister to Kennedy Road. She was unplaced in 1 start at 2YO and 2 starts at 3YO.. Petrologist was dam of SW Coup de Chance, by Tentam; SW Conform, in France and stakes placed Tight Ship, by Ack Ack.

Nearis next foal was Stope Boss, a winning chestnut colt by Windfields bred Viceregal. Her last foal to live was Markham Towne, a bay gelding by Victoria Park who had 2 wins and trouble with calcium deposits. A Hoist the Flag colt of 1973 was dead on arrival, and Nearis, in foal to Sir Ivor, was killed by lightning in Kentucky in 1973.

There was an earlier full sister to Nearis named Ballistic who, as a member of Nearctic's second crop, had a win and a second from 7 starts with $2005 in earnings. She was dam of 2 SW. Gallant Glen, a bay gelding with a star and 2 white hinds, 1968, by Gallant Man, set a new track record for 11 furlongs. He died in 1976. Ballistic's other SW was Glenaris, a chestnut filly, Irish bred, by Sassafras. She won the 1977 Hollywood Oaks and the Senorita Stakes among her stakes placings.

Before leaving the story of Kennedy Road, consider Ballistic's daughter, Stone Cottage. She was a late foal, May 28, a day later than Northern Dancer's birthday anniversary, but, despite her late arrival, stood 17 hands. A daughter of Windfields bred New Providence, Stone Cottage was stakes placed on turf as a 2YO and won 3 races as a 3YO. On September 2, 2006, Sea Siren, a then 4YO filly won the $150,000 Arlington Matron H GR-111 at Arlington. She was a daughter of the Storm Cat stallion, Stormy Atlantic, from Spend It On Mom, by Spend a Buck out of Lady O'Lyph, an unraced daughter of Lyphard from Stone Cottage, the Stone Cottage of our discussion.

Far Beyond, Diabolical 2007

Far Beyond, February 13, 1972, was one of 28 foals in Windfields bred Nijinsky 11's first crop. She was a bay mare out of Soaring, by Swaps from Skylarking 11, by Mirza 11. A Kentucky bred, she raced 8 times at 3YO, winning once and finishing second once for earnings of $5,580. This was all a quiet, unassuming beginning to the story of a dynamic racing family. Far Beyond became the dam of 2 SW. Wings of Grace, 1978, a bay mare by Key to the Mint won the Boiling Springs H GR-111T. Caverali, a gelding by Roberto, won a small hurdles stakes.

Wings of Grace produced Plenty of Grace, 1987, a bay filly by Roberto who won over $740,000. Her grade one record included a win in the Yellow Ribbon Invitational Stakes GR-1 and a third in the Flower Bowl H GR-1, among many other graded stakes wins and placings. Wings of Grace also gave us Soaring Softly 1995, a chestnut filly by Kris S, winner of the Breeders Cup Filly and Mare T GR-1 and the Flower Bowl Invitational H GR-1T. Wings of Grace is granddam of Bound by Honor (GR-111SW), SW River Rush, SW Duality and SW Private Joe.

Far Beyond's at least equally important accomplishment was to produce Battle Creek Girl, a daughter of His Majesty and a stakes placed winner at 2YO and 3YO. To the end of 2006, she was the dam of 19 foals, 18 runners, 15 winners and 6 SW. These foals include SW Wavering Girl, champion 2YO filly in Canada, a daughter of Wavering Monarch and dam of GR-1 SW Military, by Danzig; SW GR-11 level, Tricky Creek, a colt by Clever Trick; SW Parade Ground, GR-11 SW with a GR-1 placing, a son of Kingmambo; another GR-11 SW son of Kingmambo, Parade Leader; Speed Dialer, a GR-11 SW by Phone Trick and dam of SW High Speed Access and SW Storm Alert; and Everhope, a SW filly by Danzig, GR-111 placed. Battle Creek Girl is granddam of SW Star of Valor, SW Fleet Wahine, SW Gold History, SW Hippomenes and SW Chalee.

On May 19, 2007, at Pimlico, the $150,000 Emirates Airline Maryland Breeders Cup Sprint Handicap GR-111 was run for 3YO and up over 6 furlongs. The winner, Diabolical, ran the distance in 1:09.16, the track record being 1.09. He is a chestnut colt by Artax from Bonnie Byerly, by Dayjur. Artax and Dayjur were quite the sprinters. Artax won the Breeders Cup Sprint GR-1, the Vosburgh GR-1 and the Carter GR-1 among his stakes performances. He is a son of Marquetry whose broodmare sire is the Windfields bred, Northern Dancer stallion, Vice Regent.

European based and mostly raced Dayjur, by Danzig, jumped over a shadow just before the finish line of the Breeders Cup Sprint and was thus nosed out of victory by Safely Kept. Bonnie Byerly, 1995, a brown mare is a daughter of Dayjur from Plenty of Grace, whom we have just seen "in the family", a SW daughter of Roberto from Wings of Grace, a daughter of much admired Far Beyond. By winning this race Diabolical was taking his first graded stakes after finishing second in the Carter Handicap GR-1. He had other graded placings at 2YO and 4YO. Diabolical has three crosses of Northern Dancer in his pedigree, Nijinsky 11, Vice Regent and Danzig. The family of Far Beyond remains alive and kicking. We shall, I am sure, see more.

Mystic Soul and the Dancer, 2007

Mystic Soul, a 3YO bay filly by Bahri from Mystic Rhythms, by Citidancer, bred in Florida won the $75,000 Golden Poppy Stakes T at Golden Gate Fields on May 12, 2007 over 8 and ½ furlongs turf. This young filly who was winning her first stakes has 4 crosses of Northern Dancer in her family.

Bahri, a champion 3YO colt in England where he won the Queen Elizabeth 11 Stakes GR-1 and the St James's Palace Stakes GR-1 is a son of Riverman from the placed Wasnah, by Windfields bred Nijinsky 11 from Highest Trump, by Bold Bidder. In 1978, Highest Trump foaled Dance Bid, a GR-111 SW by Northern Dancer. In 1982 she followed up with another bay colt by Northern Dancer, this one GR-111 SW Northern Plain.

Mystic Rhythms, dam of Mystic Soul, and a SW herself, was by the Dixieland stallion, Citidancer. Dixieland Band is a GR-11 SW who has gained fame as a broodmare sire recently, with two Kentucky Derby winners to his credit, Monarchos and Street Sense. Citidancer is out of Willamae, who is by Tentam from Raclette, who is by Hoist the Flag from Lauries Dancer. Lauries Dancer, by Northern Dancer from It's Ann was a champion Canadian 3YO filly and Horse of the Year. Willamae was dam of Will's Way, a colt by Easy Goer who won the Travers Stakes GR-1 and the Whitney H GR-1. She also gave us Willa on the Move, by the Northern Dancer line stallion Assert, and a SW producer of over $440,000 in earnings. Willamae's last SW was Lady Reiko, a daughter of Sadler's Wells and earner of over $300,000.

Mystic Rhythms' dam, Timeandaword, 1985, was unplaced in 2 starts. She is dam of Graze, a gelding full brother to Mystic Rhythms by Citidancer who was stakes placed and won over $410,000 in his career. Timeandaword was a daughter of Robellino from unraced Regency Tale, 1978, a Windfields bred daughter of Vice Regent from Sweet Story, by Preakness winner Candy Spots (who had a patch of white spots on his rump which caused no small interest among Thoroughbred watchers in his time) from Mah Moola, by Mighty Story. Sweet Story was unraced, a yearling purchase by E.P. Taylor who gave him stakes placed Why Reason, 1972, a colt by Mr. Leader, and SW Swain, 1974, a bay colt by Vicregal, a full brother to Vice Regent. Regency Tale was unraced, probably because she was a twin, a foal of May 5, 1978. She would produce 2 SW from 6 winners from 9 runners from 10 foals.

Thus we have here Nijinsky 11, Dixieland Band, Lauries Dancer and Vice Regent - the Northern Dancer tribe on the move.

Robe Decollete, Japanese Oaks, 2007

The Yushun Himba GR-1 in Japan, the Japanese Oaks, was taken by Kentucky bred Robe Decollete, a 3YO grey filly by Cozzene from unraced Color of Gold, 1996, a bay daughter of Seeking the Gold from Sulemeif, 1980, a chestnut mare by Northern Dancer from Barely Even, by Creme dela Creme. Sulemeif raced 2 years in France and North America, with 3 wins, including the Suwanee River H GR-111T among her stakes placings.

In 1988, Sulemeif produced the bay filly, Withallprobability, by Mr. Prospector and with earnings of over $640,000 with wins in the Bonnie Miss GR-11, Forward Gal Breeders Cup GR-11 and Chicago Budweiser Breeders Cup H GR-111 among her other wins, and with a second in the Kentucky Oaks GR-1 and numerous other graded stakes. Withallprobability in turn gave us With Ability, 1998, a bay filly by A.P. Indy who was a SW and graded stakes placed at 2YO. With Ability disappeared from the stakes picture at 3YO but came back at 4YO to win the Next Move H GR-111 and the Sixty Sails H GR-111 with further graded stakes placings.

Withallprobability's first foal, Probable Colony, 1994, a brown filly by Pleasant Colony was unraced and became the dam of Summer Colony, 1998, a filly by the Storm Bird stallion, Summer Squall, winner of the GR-1 Personal Ensign H and over $1.4 million.

Sulemeif's second SW was Kadrmas, 1992, a chestnut gelding by Gulch and a winner of over $250,000. Sulemeif produced 4 other stakes placed runners, these being Kyowa Alysheba, a colt by Alysheba and winner of over $1.2 million in Japan where he is a sire; Slaymaker, a colt by Seattle Slew, Tomisue's Gold, a full sister to Color of Gold, by Seeking the Gold, and Go Carolina, a filly by Rahy. Sulemeif is granddam of SW Still in Love, a champion 3YO filly in Japan, SW Big Baillamont and SW Clear Destiny.

Robe Decollete was a $180,000 Keeneland September yearling and now has winnings of over $1.3 million, with 3 wins and 2 seconds from 8 starts at 2YO and 3YO. Cozzene, her sire, has a good number in his AEI, that being 2.40, especially when compared to his CI 1.74. He has only 30 2YO this year.

River Savage, Salmo, Archipenko, 2007

River Savage (Brazil) whom we met before when she won the Paseana H stepped up to graded class when she won the $100,000 Hawthorne H GR-111, May 6, 2007 at 8 and ½ furlongs for fillies and mares, 3YO and up at Hollywood Park. Giboulee, her broodmare sire, stood in Brazil and had 27 known SW as a broodmare sire. He was a Windfields bred SW son of Northern Dancer from the Victoria Park mare, Victory Chant, 1962, who was a part of her sire's first crop, from Orchestra. Victory Chant was the dam of 14 foals, 14 runners, 12 winners and 3 SW. Giboulee, 1974, became the first and only son of Northern Dancer to run in the Kentucky Derby, finishing seventh, if I am not mistaken, to Seattle Slew. River Savage is a 5YO brown daughter of First American, a Quiet American stallion, from Double Whistle, a stakes placed non-winner in 2 starts by Giboulee. River Savage finished third this year in the Santa Margarita Invitational GR-1.

Salmo, a chestnut gelding, 11YO, carrying 165 lbs won the $100,000 Virginia Gold Cup Timber Stakes at Great Meadow on May 5, 2007, for 5YO and up at 32 furlongs. Last year he won the Radnor Hunt Cup Timber Stakes while setting a new course record. "As a foal, Salmo was enormous but always had athletic coordination", said his connections. He is a son of Northern Baby from Melantha, 1984, by Vast Empire, by Empery. The female family is obscure. Northern Baby sired 47 SW. He was a son of Northern Dancer from Two Rings, by Round Table from Allofthem, by Bagdad. Northern Baby was a GR-1 SW who finished third in the Epsom Derby of 1979 at odds of 50 to 1.

On May 13, 2007, Archipenko, a 3YO colt carrying 127 lbs won the 10 furlong $170,000 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial Stakes GR-11 at Leopardstown in Ireland. He is a son of Kingmambo, the Mr. Prospector stallion who has this year sired Light Shift, winner of the Vodafone Oaks GR-1, from Bound, 1984, a daughter of Nijinsky 11 from Special, by Forli from Thong. SW Bound is a full sister to GR-11 SW Number, 1979, and both of them are three quarter sisters to the great stallion, Nureyev, by Northern Dancer. We took a look at this family the other day when we investigated the ill-fated Fatherland, a 2YO GR-1 SW of 1992. Bound must have been 20YO when she foaled Archipenko.
